Welcome to Year 1!
In Year 1 we learn and play together with Mrs Kellman, Mrs Knights and Miss Smith.
Our super teaching assistants are:
- Miss Bate
- Miss Magda
- Miss Webster
We are always happy to help and you will find us on the door before or after school every day!
This term our topic is 'Our World'!
We will be learning all about different parts of our world and our place in it.
In Literacy our focus will be on stories about families and other cultures. We will be learning how to write labels, lists and captions and we will be ensuring that our sentences make sense when we write them.
In Maths we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes and learning to recognise them in our enviroment. We will learn their names and begin to recognise their properties.
We will also be looking at number and place value. We will be exploring numbers up to 20 and beyond, recognising and writing them, counting accurately, sequencing them and identifying properties of numbers.
Over the half term we will be exploring maps of the world and locating where we live on them. We will explore The United Kingdom and learn the names and locations of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We will find out where we live and explore the local area.
We will also be learning about ourselves and the human body. We will name and locate different body parts and explore what we use different parts of our body for. We will identify similarities and differences between ourselves and talk about what makes us unique.
Finally we will be learning about e-safety, using the https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/5_7/hectorsworld/ website to learn about how to stay safe when using everyday technology and protect our personal data.
Please come back later in the term to see some of our fantastic work!
- Please check that your child has the correct uniform, including pumps, in line with our uniform policy.
- Please also ensure that all items of clothing, including pumps, PE kits and uniform are clearly labelled with your child's name.
Please ensure that your child has their book bag at school every day. This will enable us to access their reading books and records at all times and will help them to bring home letters and other items safely.
The children will do indoor PE on a Wednesday morning and outdoor PE on a Thursday afternoon but this will change at times due to other commitments in school. Please ensure that your child has an indoor and an outdoor PE kit in school at all times.
Your child will also need to have a kit in school if they are planning to take part in any after school sports clubs.
In Year 1 your child will be expected to complete reading, maths and spelling homework every week:
Reading - Reading books will be changed every Monday. Your child should receive 2 reading books each week. Please ensure that your child reads as often as possible at home and that you comment in their reading record. If you are working towards the 100 reading book challenge, you can also make comments on other books that your child has read that week.
Maths - This will be linked to what your child has been learning in class that week and should be at an appropriate level for your child to work with some independence, though they may need some support at times. We will send the homework books out on a Friday and homework is due back in on a Wednesday morning.
Spelling - This is a key area of the curriculum that many children find tricky and it is vital that they are practiced frequently and repetitively to ensure secure knowledge of their first 100 high frequency words by the end of Year 1. We will send the homework books out on a Friday and homework is due back in on a Wednesday morning.
