For general information and pictures of our learning in Nursery, please see below.

Our Staff:

In Nursery, the teachers who help us learn are Miss Swift and Mrs Cooper. Our fantastic Nursery Nurses are Miss Johnstone, Mrs Peacock and Mrs Nelson.

Key Information:

Clothes

The children in Nursery do not need to wear school uniform but they can if they wish too. We do have messy play within our provision areas indoor and outdoor including playdough, water and a mud kitchen. Please send your child to Nursery in clothes you do not mind getting a bit dirty.

  • Please check that your child's clothes are all labelled with their names.
  • We suggest your child has a spare change of clothes when in Nursery if possible.

Toileting

We encourage the children to be as independent as possible when using the toilet. We understand some children may need some support and all the staff are here to help. If your child isn't fully toilet trained please come and speak to us and we will put a care plan in place.

Bookbags

Please ensure that your child has their book bag at school every Wednesday. This will enable your child to choose a book to take home and share with an adult.

Communication

We use Class Dojo and Evidence Me to update parents on what the children are learning in school. Any class/school messages and photographs will be on Class Dojo and more personised observations will be added to Evidence Me.

Phonics/Reading

This is a key area of the Early Years curriculum that underpins everything we do. We read books daily to the children. Books are a great source of imagination and a fantastic tool to introduce and encourage the children to use a range of vocabulary.

We learn to read through the Phonics programme Read Write Inc. We have daily Phonics sessions for the children that are ready up untill February. In February we will introduce daily Phonics sessions to all the children. Please see the Phonics section of our website to find out more about what Phonics is and how we teach it at Whingate.

Maths

This year will introducing the Maths mastery approach as well as using the White Rose Maths Hub progression of learning. Maths is very visual and multisensory in Nursery and is embedded throughout the provision areas, as well as in focused adult led sessions.

Numberblocks is a fantastic visual and engaging show to introduce your child to maths in a fun way, this can also be enjoyed at home, please speak to a staff mumber if you are unsure where to find it!

Numberblocks - Learn to Count | Today I Learned | Learn to count ...

Vocabulary

We aim to enrich and widen children's vocabulary daily at every opportunity. This is done through story telling, introducing new topic words, and through conversations and interactions throughout the different provision areas inside and outside.

Our Curriculum

In EYFS we teach and assess the children against the 17 areas of learning. We aim for the children to make good progress and to reach age related expectations, working towards the Early Learning Goals by the end of their Reception year.
