Autumn term

This term our topic is ‘  our world’!

Through this topic we will be learning about our bodies in Science. We will learn to name different parts of our bodies and explore what we use parts of our bodies for. We will also make comparisons between ourselves and others and undertake investigations to answer questions.

In Geography we will learn about our world and where we live. We will explore maps, globes and atlases and we will learn the names of the countries that make up the United Kingdom.

In History we will explore how the way we live has changed over time, in particular looking at similarities and differences in toys that we play with now in comparison to those that our grandparents and great grandparents played with.

In literacy lessons we will explore books from different cultures and we will also look at books that follow a theme of family life and friendships. We will be working on key skills such as letter formation, simple sentence structure, finger spaces, spelling, and basic punctuation. The children will also work on developing their independence in writing.

In Maths this term we will start by looking at sorting and counting.

Every week the children will have a session to work on their mental maths skills. This half term we will be focusing on counting accurately (and saying the number names correctly), as well as finding one more and one less than a number.

In Computing we will be looking at E-Safety. The children will explore creating avatars and passwords and the importance of keeping personal information safe.

Key information

Clothes

  • Please check that your child has the correct uniform, including pumps, in line with our uniform policy.
  • Please also ensure that all items of clothing, including pumps, PE kits and uniform are clearly labelled with your child's name.

Bookbags

Please ensure that your child has their book bag at school every Wednesday. This will enable us to access their reading books and records at all times so they can be changed, marked and new homework given out.  Please note that this is a day we have allocated time and resources to, so if your child's bag is not in on that day, unfortunately work will not be changed/marked for that week.

PE

The children will do outdoor PE on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing their outdoor PE kit every Thursday.

There will be no after school sports clubs until further notice.

Homework

In Year 1 your child will be expected to complete reading, maths and spelling homework every week:

Reading - Reading books will be changed every Wednesday. Your child should receive 1 or 2 reading books each week. Please ensure that your child reads as often as possible at home and that you comment in their reading record. If you are working towards the 100 reading book challenge, you can also make comments on other books that your child has read that week.

Maths - This will be linked to what your child has been learning in class that week and should be at an appropriate level for your child to work with some independence, though they may need some support at times. We will send the homework books out on a Friday and homework is due back in on a Wednesday morning.

Spelling - This is a key area of the curriculum that many children find tricky and it is vital that they are practised frequently and repetitively to ensure secure knowledge of their first 100 high frequency words by the end of Year 1. We will send the homework books out on a Wednesday and homework is due back in the following Wednesday morning.

Below you will find our long term topic plan for the year. This shows you what our topics are and what subjects we will be studying within each topic.
