Sports Leaders
Here at Whingate we have a strong team of Year 6 children who support the promotion of sports and leading a healthy lifestyle within school. Our team of 20 Sports Leaders volunteer their time to work alongside Mr Lightowler from Leeds Rhinos to develop skills required to become excellent leaders in sport such as confidence, communication, organisation and creativity.
To achieve Sports Leader status, the children participate in weekly training sessions and deliver a range of non-competitive activities available to pupils during break times and lunch times to boost sports engagement outside of learning time. Alongside this, our Sports Leaders support both inter and intra-school sporting events such as Sports Day and our Cluster Sports Day event. All of the above contributes to our Silver Games Mark status awarded in Summer 2019.
Over the next academic year (2019/2020) we aim to train another 20 Sports Leaders from Year 5 to continue the role independently in 2020/2021. Our current leaders are looking forwards to facing new personal challengers, offering even more activities to all pupils as well as organising some of their own after school competitions.
